FAQs › How Long Does an Acupuncture Session Take?
Initial consultations at Rainbow Medicine are 60–75 minutes, including case history, TCM diagnosis, and first treatment. Follow-up sessions are 45–60 minutes. The needle retention phase is typically 20–30 minutes.
Your first appointment is the longest — approximately 60–75 minutes. This includes a comprehensive health history (20–30 minutes), TCM diagnosis using pulse and tongue assessment, discussion of your treatment plan and expected timeline, and your first acupuncture treatment with 20–30 minutes of needle retention.
Follow-up appointments are 45–60 minutes. They begin with a brief update on your progress since the last session (5–10 minutes), followed by TCM reassessment (pulse and tongue), any adjustments to the needle protocol, and treatment with 25–30 minutes of needle retention.
Needle retention is the 20–30 minute period during which you lie comfortably with needles in place. Many patients use this time to rest deeply or fall asleep — this is entirely appropriate and does not diminish treatment efficacy. The treatment room is warm, dim, and quiet, with soft music if preferred.
Your practitioner will check on you at least once during the retention phase. If any needle is uncomfortable, you can adjust your position or ask the practitioner to remove it — there is never any reason to lie through discomfort.
Rainbow Medicine offers online booking for initial and follow-up consultations.
