Acupuncture

AHPRA Registered Modality

Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of ultra-fine, sterile, single-use needles at specific points along the body's meridian system to regulate the flow of Qi and Blood, calm the nervous system and stimulate the body's own healing responses. It is the cornerstone treatment at Rainbow Medicine and is used for conditions ranging from pain and fertility to insomnia and digestive health. Modern research has identified mechanisms including endorphin release, regulation of the autonomic nervous system, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Commonly used for: Pain, fertility, hormonal health, sleep, anxiety, immunity, digestive conditions, skin disorders and general wellbeing.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

AHPRA Registered Modality

Chinese herbal medicine is one of the most sophisticated and extensively documented herbal medicine systems in the world, with a recorded history spanning over 2,000 years. Individualised herbal formulas — typically combinations of 8–15 medicinal substances — are prescribed based on your precise TCM diagnosis and adjusted as your health pattern evolves. All herbs used at Rainbow Medicine are sourced from TGA-compliant suppliers and batch-tested for heavy metals and contaminants. Formulas are available in granule, capsule or raw form to suit patient preferences.

Commonly used for: Hormonal and menstrual conditions, fertility, skin disorders, digestive complaints, immune support, sleep, and chronic conditions.

Moxibustion

Traditional TCM Therapy

Moxibustion involves the burning of compressed dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris, known in Chinese as 'Ai Ye') near or on acupuncture points to warm and stimulate them. The gentle radiant heat produced penetrates deeply into the tissue, tonifying Qi and Yang, warming the meridians, expelling Cold and Damp pathogenic factors, and promoting circulation of Qi and Blood. Moxibustion is particularly beneficial for conditions involving Cold patterns, Yang deficiency, chronic fatigue, certain types of menstrual pain and the famous 'breech baby' protocol (BL 67 point at 34–37 weeks gestation).

Commonly used for: Breech baby position, Cold-type menstrual pain, fatigue, immune deficiency, chronic digestive weakness.

Cupping Therapy

Traditional TCM Therapy

Cupping uses glass, silicone or plastic cups placed on the skin to create a suction effect that lifts and separates tissue layers, promoting the circulation of Qi and Blood, releasing myofascial tension and drawing out pathogenic Damp and Cold from deeper tissues. At Rainbow Medicine, both stationary cupping (cups held in place) and sliding cupping (cups moved along muscle groups for a broad treatment effect) are used. Temporary circular marks are common and typically fade within 3–7 days. Cupping is deeply relaxing and is frequently combined with acupuncture in a single session.

Commonly used for: Musculoskeletal pain, respiratory conditions (coughs, congestion), sports recovery, back and shoulder pain, stress release.

Tui Na Massage

Traditional TCM Therapy

Tui Na is a sophisticated Chinese therapeutic massage system that works along the meridians and sinew channels of the body using a range of specialised hand techniques — including rolling, kneading, grasping, pressing, plucking and percussion. Unlike general relaxation massage, Tui Na is a diagnosis-driven therapy applied to specific anatomical regions and channel pathways. It is particularly effective for musculoskeletal pain, joint stiffness, sports injuries and conditions where restoring free flow of Qi in the sinew channels is the treatment priority. Tui Na is often incorporated into acupuncture sessions.

Commonly used for: Back and neck pain, joint stiffness, sports injuries, headaches, frozen shoulder, paediatric conditions.

Gua Sha

Traditional TCM Therapy

Gua Sha involves applying a smooth-edged tool — traditionally a Chinese porcelain spoon or jade scraper — to oiled skin along the muscles and meridians, using firm stroking movements to bring stagnant Blood and fluids to the surface. The characteristic redness or petechiae (sha) produced indicates the movement of stagnant Qi and Blood. Modern research has found that Gua Sha reduces inflammatory markers and promotes circulation in treated areas. It is a powerful treatment for chronic muscle tension, neck and upper back pain, respiratory conditions and early stages of colds and flu. The redness typically fades within 2–4 days.

Commonly used for: Chronic neck and upper back pain, myofascial tension, early cold and flu, respiratory congestion, fatigue.

Ear Seeds / Auriculotherapy

Traditional TCM Therapy

The ear contains a microsystem of the entire body mapped through auricular acupuncture points, first systematised by French neurologist Paul Nogier in the 1950s and subsequently integrated into the TCM framework. Ear seeds — small Vaccaria seeds or gold pellets adhered to specific auricular points with medical tape — provide ongoing stimulation between acupuncture sessions. Patients are encouraged to gently press the seeds for 1–2 minutes several times daily. Ear seeds are particularly valuable as a cost-effective adjunct for conditions requiring continuous treatment support, including anxiety, insomnia, food cravings, and pain management.

Commonly used for: Anxiety, insomnia, appetite regulation, smoking cessation support, pain management, fertility support.

Bowen Therapy

Complementary Therapy

Bowen Therapy is an Australian-developed gentle fascial bodywork technique using precise rolling moves over muscles, tendons and fascia, separated by deliberate rest periods that allow the nervous system to integrate each set of movements. It works via the proprioceptive nervous system to reset muscle tone, release fascial restrictions and shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance. Bowen Therapy is remarkably gentle — suitable for all ages and particularly valuable for those who find deeper manual therapies uncomfortable. It complements acupuncture exceptionally well, addressing structural and fascial patterns that acupuncture alone may not fully resolve.

Commonly used for: Back pain, frozen shoulder, postural imbalances, headaches, knee pain, stress and anxiety.

Holistic Psychotherapy

Integrative Mind-Body Therapy

Holistic psychotherapy at Rainbow Medicine is an integrative approach that weaves together elements of Western counselling and psychotherapy with TCM's understanding of the mind-body-spirit connection. In Chinese Medicine, each organ system governs specific emotions — the Liver relates to anger and frustration, the Heart to joy and anxiety, the Spleen to worry, the Lung to grief and the Kidney to fear. Holistic psychotherapy helps patients explore the emotional and psychological dimensions of their health patterns, supported by acupuncture and herbal medicine that directly address the organ system imbalances connected to their emotional experience. This integrated approach is particularly valuable for anxiety, depression, grief, burnout and the emotional dimensions of chronic illness.

Commonly used for: Anxiety, depression, emotional stress, burnout, grief, relationship difficulties, and the emotional aspects of chronic health conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, Dr Christine Shen will combine several modalities in a single session based on your TCM diagnosis and the condition being treated. For example, a typical session for back pain might include acupuncture, cupping and Tui Na. A skin condition session might include acupuncture, ear seeds and a herbal prescription. You don't need to request specific treatments — Dr Christine will recommend the optimal combination for your situation and discuss it with you before proceeding.
Private health fund rebates vary by treatment type and policy. Acupuncture is covered by most extras policies with Chinese Medicine benefits. Chinese herbal medicine may be covered separately as a distinct item under some policies. Bowen Therapy, cupping, Tui Na and other adjunct modalities performed within an acupuncture session may be covered under the acupuncture consultation item. It is best to check with your specific fund. We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming for all eligible treatments.
Safety is our absolute priority. Dr Christine Shen conducts a thorough review of all pharmaceutical medications and supplements at your initial consultation and before prescribing any herbal formula. Certain herbs are known to interact with specific medications — this is carefully assessed for every patient. You should always inform your prescribing GP or specialist that you are also receiving Chinese herbal medicine, and never adjust prescription medication doses without medical advice.
Yes — and this is typically the most effective approach. A 60-minute follow-up consultation may include acupuncture (with needles resting for 20–25 minutes during which cupping or Gua Sha may be applied to adjacent areas), Tui Na massage, moxibustion and ear seed application — all within a single session. The initial 90-minute consultation also includes the first acupuncture treatment. Additional modalities do not typically incur additional fees — the session fee covers the complete treatment.
