FAQs › Can Acupuncture Prevent Migraines?
Yes — a 2016 Cochrane review of 22 trials (4,985 patients) found acupuncture at least as effective as prophylactic drug treatment for migraine prevention, with fewer adverse effects and good patient acceptance.
The Cochrane systematic review on acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis (Linde et al., 2016) is unambiguous: acupuncture reduces the frequency of migraines significantly compared to no treatment, and is at least as effective as — and in some analyses more effective than — preventive medications such as topiramate, propranolol, and amitriptyline.
Importantly, the evidence was for preventive acupuncture — treatment administered regularly between attacks, not only during attacks. A typical preventive course involves 10–15 weekly sessions, with most patients noticing a reduction in attack frequency from session 4–6. The benefit persists after the course ends and is maintained at 6-month follow-up.
TCM identifies several patterns that produce migraines. Liver Yang Rising — the most common pattern — produces throbbing temporal pain worsened by stress, anger, and bright light. Treatment aims to anchor Liver Yang, nourish Liver Yin, and clear ascending Wind-Heat.
Other patterns include Liver Blood deficiency (dull migraines, worse during or after menstruation, relieved by rest), Phlegm-Damp obstruction (heavy, foggy headaches), and Kidney deficiency (occipital migraines in older or depleted patients). Accurate pattern identification is essential for effective treatment.
