Dr Christine Shen's unique approach weaves Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Holistic Psychotherapy into a single, seamlessly integrated healing experience. While the acupuncture needles gently work on restoring your body's balance, you recline comfortably on the treatment bed in a deeply relaxed state. Christine engages in an open, unhurried therapeutic conversation — exploring whatever is present in your life that day, whether physical, emotional, relational or spiritual. Your herbal medicine is reviewed and adjusted within the same session. True wellbeing cannot be separated into compartments; this integrated session addresses the whole person, all at once.

Private Health Insurance
Rainbow Medicine offers HICAPS on-the-spot claiming for all eligible private health fund members. Simply bring your health fund card to your appointment and your rebate will be processed immediately — you only pay the gap. No paperwork, no waiting, no reimbursement forms.
Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are covered as extras under many private health policies. The rebate amount varies significantly between funds and policy levels — we recommend checking your specific coverage with your fund before your first visit.

Most major health funds are supported through the HICAPS network. If your fund is not listed, please call us — we can verify your fund's HICAPS eligibility. Medicare does not currently cover acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine.

Packages are non-refundable but transferable. Sessions must be used within 12 months of purchase. Private health rebates apply to packaged sessions where eligible — rebate is claimed per individual session.
Payment & Policies
Payment Methods
We accept cash, EFTPOS, Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay. Payment is due at the time of your consultation. For telehealth appointments, payment is processed via invoice prior to the session.
Concession Rates
Concession pricing may be available for full-time students, Health Care Card holders and patients experiencing financial hardship. Please speak with Dr Christine Shen confidentially at your initial consultation. We believe financial circumstances should never be a barrier to accessing quality care.
Cancellation Policy
We require a minimum of 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice may be charged a cancellation fee of 50% of the consultation fee. Late cancellations and no-shows prevent other patients from accessing care.

Appointment reminders are sent via SMS 48 hours before your scheduled visit. Please ensure your contact details are current when booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
The easiest way is to call the member services number on the back of your health fund card and ask whether your specific extras policy covers acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine, and what your annual benefit amount is. Many funds require a minimum "mid" or "top" level extras cover for acupuncture. Alternatively, log into your fund's member portal — most display your remaining extras benefits online.
This depends on your specific policy. Some funds allow a single combined claim per visit, while others may allow separate claims for acupuncture and herbal medicine if they are billed as separate items. We will process your HICAPS claim in the way that maximises your rebate within your fund's guidelines. Please bring your health fund card to every appointment.
Currently, Medicare does not provide rebates for acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine. Your rebates are accessed through private health insurance extras cover only. We do provide receipts for all treatments which can be used for tax purposes if medical expenses are claimed through your tax return — please consult your accountant regarding eligibility.
The $150 initial consultation fee covers the full 90 minutes: comprehensive health history intake, TCM diagnosis (pulse and tongue assessment), your personalised treatment plan and your first acupuncture treatment — all in the same session. Cupping or Tui Na may also be included during this first visit if clinically appropriate. Chinese herbal medicines, if prescribed, are charged separately at cost.

The Integrated Wellbeing Session is Dr Christine Shen's signature approach and the way she most likes to work with her established patients. You are settled comfortably onto the treatment bed, and acupuncture needles are placed according to your current presenting pattern. Once the needles are in and you are relaxed, Christine begins a gentle, open conversation — covering whatever is present for you that day. This might be physical symptoms, emotional states, how relationships are feeling, work pressures, life transitions, or simply what has been on your mind. There is no agenda imposed; the conversation follows what is most alive for you. Your Chinese herbal prescription is reviewed and adjusted as part of the same session. The three modalities — acupuncture, herbal medicine and holistic psychotherapy — do not happen one after another; they are woven together simultaneously, each informing the other, while you rest in a calm, deeply supported state throughout. Most patients describe this as the most profoundly restorative hour of their week.
