Do I Need a GP Referral to See an Acupuncturist?

Acupuncture in Australia is a direct-access health service — there is no requirement for a GP referral, Medicare referral, or specialist letter to book an appointment or claim private health insurance rebates. You can book directly at Rainbow Medicine through our online booking system or by phone.

This is in contrast to some Medicare-rebatable allied health services (physiotherapy, psychology) which require a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan or Chronic Disease Management plan for Medicare subsidy. Acupuncture is not currently covered by Medicare in Australia, but it is covered by most private health extras policies.

When a Referral Might Be Useful

While a referral is not required, it can be helpful to bring a summary of any relevant investigations (blood tests, imaging, specialist letters) to your first appointment. This context helps your practitioner understand your full health picture and avoid any potential interactions with ongoing medical treatment.
